The Occupy Oakland camp has already been a tremendous inspiration to the other occupy camps around the country. Oakland has had actions on par with that of the Wall St. occupation, and has arguably taken the brunt of the force compared to the rest of the country. This is not a source of pride, simply an observation.
I have no pride in the occupy oakland camp right now. I also have been much more invested in the occupy SF camp which is decidedly more organized and more capable of keeping things peaceful.
As I was at the Oakland camp earlier today, I met with a number of different people who feel that the movement was co-opted by people more concerned with justice for Oscar Grant rather than interested in the core of the Occupy Wall St. This may have doomed us from the start, but that doesn’t mean we can’t evolve and take it to the next level.
I think its safe to say that Oakland has taken enough shit from the cops and we have decidedly given it back to them for a month straight now. That’s no easy task, and we’ve done it with gusto.
I now think that the cops should admit that we’ve proven ourselves to them, which should give them just cause to join us.
The initial refusal to work with the police was inspiring at the time, but it seems to have been proved to be the wrong move. I think the camp should welcome the cops into the movement and together we can be a non-violent force and example to the world.
We can continue to shut down the ports.
We can start shutting down the bay bridge. Imagine doing it with police escort.
We can occupy every spare scrap of land with vegetables, fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, and begin reshaping our town into a permaculture where we are able to live in harmony with each other and with nature.
I do believe that we need to shut down the machine of capitalism, but I don’t see the point in trying to do it with violence. We NEED to morally evolve.
I’m going downtown to the camp right now and am hoping that cooler heads will prevail all round. Be safe everybody.
